Remembering Our Beloved Sister Eliane of the Virgin of Carmel

Sr. Eilane of the Virgin of Carmel went to the Lord on March 15th, 2023, at the age of 92. Her Funeral Mass of Christian burial was celebrated by his Excellency, Bishop Kevin Sweeney, and was attended by her community at the Carmel of Morristown, her family members and friends. Born in New Jersey and a convert to the Catholic Church, she continued to follow the Lord’s call in her life by joining an active religious community. After some time, sister discerned a new call to the contemplative religious life which lead her to the Carmel in Morristown. She served the community as an extern sister, assisting the community in errands and care of the monastery’s grounds. She was well known for her love for God’s creation, especially seen in her care for animals who often would approach her without any hesitation. Later in life, sister discerned that God was inviting her join the community and live inside the cloister. This step was celebrated with a festive renewal of her vows which was a joy for us all. In her old age sister was known for her Irish wit and humor as well as her patience in suffering. Her charity for her fellow sisters continued despite her own ailments. She was a treasure to our community and will be much missed. As we pray for her eternal repose, may she also intercede for us all.
